Drone Club 2025 (Term 3) Week of 4th July – 24th Sep

Mission: Mars Drone Quest

8-Week Coding & Flight Simulation Program (Term 3 , 2025)

Program snapshot
Blast off to the Red Planet, no rocket required! Across eight action-packed weekly sessions, students use a realistic drone-flight simulator set on a 3-D model of Mars to tackle progressively harder challenges, from scouting frozen craters to delivering supplies to an outpost. Along the way they master the fundamentals of coding, robotics logic, and problem-solving, all while having a stellar time.

Tech needed Laptop (Windows/macOS/Chromebook). iPad works, but a keyboard-equipped laptop gives the best coding experience. We provide the simulator licence & install guide.
Class size Max 15 explorers → plenty of instructor time

Learning trajectory

  1. Pre-flight Check – Meet your crew, set up the simulator, and learn basic joystick controls.

  2. Mars Mapping – Use block-based code to automate a survey drone and create a topographic map of Gale Crater.

  3. Obstacle Navigation – Introduce conditional logic to weave through dust-devil hazard zones.

  4. Autonomous Landing – Functions & loops: program a perfect touchdown on a helipad at Olympus Mons basecamp.

  5. Sensor Suite – Integrate virtual LiDAR & altimeters to follow rugged canyon terrain.

  6. Resupply Run – Multi-step missions and variables: deliver rover parts across Valles Marineris.

  7. Search-and-Rescue – Debug a stranded drone’s code and bring it safely back to base.

  8. Mission Showcase – Teams design their own Mars challenge, present code, and fly it live for parents.

Why parents & teachers love it

  • Coding by doing – Visual blocks transition smoothly to text-based Python, making abstract concepts tangible.

  • STEAM integration – Geography, physics, and space science woven into every flight.

  • Safe & scalable – 100 % simulator-based; zero risk, zero extra hardware to buy.

  • Future-ready skills – Logic, collaboration, and resilience are built into each mission.
